Rosenhöhe Darmstadt

"Vor allen andren lächelt mir dieser Erdenwinkel", ('Before all others smiles this earth corner at me') gushed Grand Duchess Wilhelmine about her beautiful garden at the Rosenhöhe. Beginning of the 19th century the former stately vineyard was turned into an English landscaped garden. Circular flower beds and picturesque tree groupings were planted and the court architect Georg Moller beautified the complex with teahouses and pavilions some can still be seen.
In 1894 Prince Wilhelm had the splendid Palais Rosenhöhe built for himself, where between 1903 and 1918 Prussian legates resided.
The Palais was later sectioned into apartments and finally in 1944 during a bomb raid of Darmstadt destroyed.
The last Darmstädter Grand Duke, Ernst Ludwig, the founder of the artists' colony, was also interested in horticulture. "To live up to the lovely name Rosenhöhe", he decided to 'create a rose garden as nobody in Germany has ever known it". He constructed the rose garden with Rosendom.

But the Rosenhöhe degenerated after the First World War. It was used during the postwar period as a fruit and vegetable garden until its restoration in 1925. The Löwentor (lion gate) originally situated at the Mathildenhöhe was in 1927 relocated to the Rosenhöhe.
The town Darmstadt formed after the Second World War a new artists' colony at the Park Rosenhöhe.

The modern housing estate in rural location consists of individual houses including expansive atelier rooms. They are occupied by renowned fine artists, composers, authors and their families. The works of the there living artists set important accents at the cultural events in the German speaking area. The closeness to the Mathildenhöhe and the first Darmstädter artists' colony with its buildings in the Art Nouveau style from the beginning of the century ties them to the town's cultural tradition.
The Park Rosenhöhe is being reconstructed after old models since 1979. It is seen today as one of Darmstadt's prettiest gardens. For its maintenance and financial support a Förderverein Park Rosenhöhe e.V. has been founded.
